The workshop “Mankind in the Desert: an interdisciplinary approach using integrated scientific and sustainability research” is organized by the Centro del Desierto de Atacama of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. The purpose of the workshop is to discuss the Atacama territory, understood as a fertile land for multidisciplinary research embracing important challenges to be tackled regarding sustainable use and living. We will integrate different subjects from the natural and cultural sciences using a multi-scale approach, with ancient and present experiences, that will allow us to explore research questions to be answered in future collective efforts. A main goal of our workshop is to provide a baseline on the physical evolution of the desert, including environmental and climate change, human adaptation and development across time, resilience and future.

Within this context, some of the topics to be included are: early man and the desert; climatic variability and physiographic of the desert landscape; natural resources, technology and sustainability. This will allow to establish a context about the occupation of the desert in the long run, helping to understand the interrelationships between man-environment, today and yesterday, and establishing the need to contribute visions and solutions to the problem of sustainable use of the desert environment.
